Honshu, Japan

The greenest city

Byodo-in Temple was one of the most beautiful architectural sites I visited on my trip and in addition to the temple itself, the museum on its grounds is one of the best designs I've ever come across. The temple's main building is better known as Phoenix Hall and houses a well known statue of Amida Buddha and a series of ancient paintings on the walls that have unfortunately worn to the point of destruction.

The landscaping of the grounds fits the architecture flawlessly and makes for a truly spiritual and artistic visit and the little shops and tea gardens lining the walk from the train are enough to occupy anyone for a day by themselves.
